The history of diesel Jeeps.
The first civilian Jeep to offer a diesel was the 1961 Jeep CJ-5. It came with a rare Perkins 4.192 diesel engine. As the name suggests, this inline-four diesel displaced 192 cubic inches and enjoyed a healthy 58 hp and 143 lb-ft. This engine would continue till 1968. However, the vehicle that convinced Jeep that America was ready for a diesel Wrangler was the Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel. The EcoDiesel enjoys 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque thanks to the engine manufacturer's 3.0L turbodiesel V6. Jeep introduced a new generation of Wranglers in 2006, allowing drivers to order their Wrangler with an EcoDiesel. This powertrain came with 200 horsepower and 302 ft. lb torque.
