The Ram trucks that we know and love today first arrived in 2011. The Ram brand officially split off from Dodge in 2009. However, before that, they were called Dodge Ram trucks. In fact, many people still call them that today.

Dodge brothers, John and Horace, joined together in the early 1900s to form a new car company. Their first car appeared in 1914. They built their first truck during World War I and it took the form of a panel van. The first Dodge pickup trucks made their debut in 1921. Then, in 1928, Chrysler acquired Dodge and continued to produce its trucks.

In 1936, Dodge made the switch from using car frames to stronger modern truck-style frames. This allowed them to produce larger, more capable trucks. It is also around this time, 1932 in fact, that the first Ram hood ornaments were added to the trucks. It switched. from hood ornaments to badges after 1954.

In 1981, the very first Dodge Ram pickup made its debut. And, in a tribute to the trucks of the past, these first Ram trucks came with a Ram hood ornament. Just like today, the trucks came with three designations, 150, 250, and 350. This first generation of Dodge Ram trucks lasted over a decade.

The second-generation came out in 1994 and came with more car-like interior, stronger capabilities, and upgraded engines. In addition, the model designations changed to what we know today, 1500, 2500, and 3500. Ram trucks were also the largest on the market, with the most spacious cabs.

Fifteen years later is when Ram split from Dodge to become its own brand. This allowed each brand to focus on what it does best-cars for Dodge and trucks for Ram.
