The 4x4 Systems of the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

Legendary 4x4 capability now in a variety of options

The Jeep Grand Cherokee began its reign in 1993. It was unique at the time because it was a supremely capable SUV based on a unibody chassis instead of an underbody frame. Today, it is still based on a unibody chassis and, after almost 30 years, is one of the finest SUVs you can buy.

Today, the newest iteration of the Grand Cherokee is the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L.  Not only is it a technological tour-de-force with a fully-connected infotainment system and over 110 advanced safety and security features, it offers more 4x4 capability than virtually any other vehicle on the road.

"When you set out to reimagine an SUV as beloved as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, building on its nearly 30-year legacy as an overachiever is paramount to every decision that is made," said Christian Meunier, Jeep Brand Chief Executive Officer. "With that legacy guiding the Jeep team, the new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is crafted to exceed expectations and do what no other SUV can do: deliver legendary Jeep 4x4 off-road capability blended with superior on-road manners."

In this article, we will examine the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L and all its suspension options. We will look at its three 4x4 systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II), the Quadra-Lift air suspension system, and the Selec-Terrain traction management system.

What is the difference between the Grand Cherokee 4x4 systems?

The Grand Cherokee L can be outfitted with one of three 4x4 systems.

Quadra-Trac I uses input from multiple sensors to automatically adjust torque distribution if tire slippage occurs. When slippage is detected, as much as 100 percent of available torque is routed to the axle with the most traction.

Quadra-Trac II is similar except it has a two-speed active transfer case with 2.72:1 low-range gear reduction. It also senses wheel slippage and directs torque to the tires that have traction.

Quadra-Drive II offers a two-speed active transfer case plus a rear Electronic Limited Slip Differential (eLSD).  The system instantly detects tire slip and smoothly distributes engine torque to all the tires with traction. Quadra-Drive II is available on the Grand Cherokee Overland 4 models when equipped with the Off-Road Group and is standard on Summit models.

What does the Quadra-Lift system do?

The Jeep Quadra-Lift air suspension uses electronic adaptive damping technology to adjust the shock tuning response. It can be set to operate automatically, or manually with console controls, and features five height settings:

Normal Ride Height:  With 8.3 inches of clearance, it offers excellent aerodynamics during on-road driving
Off-road 1: Lifts the vehicle an additional 1.6 inches from normal for added height
Off-road 2: Lifts the vehicle an additional 2.4 inches from normal for added height
Park Mode: Lowers 1.8 inches from normal for easy ingress/egress for the driver and passengers
Aero Mode: Lowers the vehicle 0.8 inches from normal for optimal performance and fuel economy

Courtesy of the Quadra-Lift air suspension system, the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offers a 23.6-degree departure angle, a 30.1-degree approach angle, and 22.6-degree break-over angle.

What is the Selec-Terrain traction management system?

Coordinating all the different suspension technology on the Grand Cherokee is the job of the Selec-Terrain traction management system. It offers five available terrain modes (Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, Mud/Sand) and electronically coordinates the engine, transmission, 4x4 torque splitting, braking and handling systems, steering and suspension systems, throttle control, transmission shifting, transfer case and traction control.

Is there anything else new on the Grand Cherokee L suspensions?

Yes, new for the 2021 Grand Cherokee L 4x4 is front-axle disconnect. If the vehicle senses that road conditions do not require all-wheel drive, the front-axle disconnect automatically places the Grand Cherokee L in two-wheel drive. This reduces driveline drag and improves fuel economy. The four-wheel drive automatically re-engages when the vehicle senses it is needed.

Additionally, for the first time ever on the Grand Cherokee, the front axle is bolted directly to the engine to allow for better management of noise, vibration and harshness. Coupled with active/electronic engine mounts and an enhanced active noise cancellation system, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is an exceptionally quiet vehicle.
