There's something unique about the Jeep Wrangler. Actually, there's a lot that's unique about it; the open-air freedom, the rugged design, and, of course, the iconic capability, to name a few. The capability of any vehicle begins under the hood, and under the hood of each 2023 Jeep Wrangler is one of four powerful engine options, ranging from a V6 to an exhilarating V8! Here at Flagler Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we want our customers to be confident in their vehicle purchase by knowing all that they can about the car. So, if you're interested in a Jeep Wrangler, please keep reading below to learn more about its available engine options!
Jeep Wrangler V6 Engine
Standard equipment for the Jeep lineup is Jeep's Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 engine. Equipped with eTorque mild-hybrid technology, the Pentastar engine maximizes fuel economy by providing a seamless Engine Stop-Start function. This deactivates the engine while idling, leaving the car in accessory mode until the brake pedal is released. At this point, the eTorque system will seamlessly get the engine running again. The V6 engine provides drivers with 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The V6 engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard equipment. However, an 8-speed automatic transmission is optional.
Jeep Wrangler Turbocharged Engine
Torque is everything while off-roading, as it is what keeps the wheels moving. Using a low-inertia turbocharger, the 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine provides drivers with 295 lb-ft of torque accompanied by 270 horsepower. The turbocharged engine comes standard with the Sahara trim, while it is available for the Sport and Rubicon trim levels. The turbocharged engine comes paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Jeep Wrangler PHEV
Introduced in 2021, Jeep's 4xe (four-by-electric) powertrain pairs the aforementioned 2.0L turbocharged engine with two electric motors and a 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack, making it a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The 4xe system uses an engine-mounted electric motor to replace the traditional alternator to provide a seamless stop-start function and send power back to the battery pack through regenerative braking. Another electric motor is inside the transmission, where the torque convertor would normally be. This location allows torque to be sent to the wheels immediately instead of needing to wait for engine RPMs to build up. This improves off-roading capability even further. The Wrangler 4xe lineup delivers 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of instantaneous torque. The Willys, Sahara, Rubicon, and High Altitude trims are all eligible for the 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain. Like the turbocharged engine, the PHEV system comes linked to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Jeep Wrangler V8 Engine
The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 comes exclusively with a 392 cubic inch 6.4L HEMI V8 engine. Jeep designed the Wrangler Rubicon 392 to be the fastest, most powerful Wrangler ever, giving it 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, this takes Rubicon 392 drivers from 0-60 in just 4.5 seconds! The Rubicon 392 also comes exclusively with Jeep's new Hydro Guide system, providing three channels to separate up to fifteen gallons of water from the air intake to provide the engine with air even when a bow break washes over the hood. Additionally, the distinctive HEMI rumble is emitted through a dual-mode exhaust system, which can be made quieter by Normal mode by sending exhaust through the whole muffler, or louder by Performance mode, which uses an electronically controlled valve to allow for a straight flow of exhaust.
What Are the Jeep Wrangler 4x4 Systems?
The Jeep Wrangler is available for three 4x4 systems. Standard equipment for most of the lineup is Command-Trac part-time 4x4. Command-Trac uses driver input to shift between two-wheel-drive, 4-high, and 4-low drive modes. Two-wheel drive is to be used on smooth, dry roads to maximize fuel efficiency. Meanwhile, 4-high should be used when driving at higher speeds on surfaces where traction can be uncertain. A time to use 4-high would be on loose gravel or during heavy rain. Meanwhile, 4-low should be used for low-speed crawling over rugged terrain. Selec-Trac 4x4 is optional for the Sport trim while standard on the Sahara, Rubicon 392, and 4xe lineup. Selec-Trac is an intuitive system that distributes torque to the axle with the most traction without using any driver input. Lastly, exclusive to the Rubicon trim is Rock-Trac 4x4. Rock-Trac is another part-time system, much like Command-Trac. However, the Rock-Trac transfer case uses a low-range gear ratio of 4:1. This means that when the system is in 4-low mode, every four rotations of the transmission output shaft turn the axles one time. This provides better low-speed crawling control by sending more torque to the wheels at lower speeds.
