Learn More from Flagler Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram!
Since its 1993 introduction, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has consistently impressed drivers and critics alike with its undeniably impressive performance both on and off the road. At the heart of this performance is the Grand Cherokee's three available 4x4 systems – Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II – each offering impressive traction with their own unique functions. Here at Flagler Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we strive to provide our customers with as much information about the models we sell as possible. That said, please continue reading below to discover the three advanced 4x4 systems of the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee!
Quadra-Trac I - Full-Time 4x4
First in the Grand Cherokee's lineup of 4x4 systems is Quadra-Trac I, a full-time automatic 4x4 system. Quadra-Trac I operates in 4-High at all times, using a single-speed transfer case to split torque by 52% to the rear axle and 48% to the front axle. While technically a full-time system, Quadra-Trac I uses a brake lock differential to manage wheel speed from side to side rather than running all four wheels at the same speed all the time, resulting in greater traction. This innovative technology, combined with Jeep's traction management system, Selec-Terrain, allows drivers to customize their capability, adding an element of intrigue to the driving experience. The Selec-Terrain switch, found on the center console, features Auto, Sand/Mud, Snow, and Sport modes. Selecting one of the modes will automatically adjust the brake lock differential, electronic stability control, transmission shift points, throttle control, and traction control to optimize traction for the terrain that is selected.
Quadra-Trac II - Traction No Matter the Terrain
The next system available is Quadra-Trac II. This system removes the aforementioned single-speed transfer case, replacing it with a two-speed one. By adding a two-speed transfer case, drivers can choose between 4-Low and 4-High, depending on the terrain and vehicle speed. For example, when driving at on-road speeds in low traction conditions such as heavy rain, 4-High will provide the best traction. However, while off-roading at slower speeds, 4-Low will provide the traction you need to overcome rocks, mud, and other trail conditions. In addition to the brake lock differential, Quadra-Trac II can also send up to 100% of available engine torque to the axle that has the best grip and simultaneously limit power sent to the wheels that are slipping. Additionally, opting for a Grand Cherokee model with Quadra-Trac II 4x4 adds Rock mode to the Selec-Terrain system to optimize the powertrain systems for low-speed crawling control.
What is the Grand Cherokee's Most Capable 4x4 System?
Topping off the Grand Cherokee's lineup of 4x4 systems is Quadra-Drive II with a rear electronic limited-slip differential. Like the previous two systems, Quadra-Drive II uses both a two-speed transfer case and brake lock differential. However, Quadra-Drive II also adds an electronic limited-slip differential to the rear axle. The system uses a network of wheel speed sensors to detect a loss of traction at the earliest possible moment and counteract it by transferring up to 100% of available torque to a single wheel with the most traction. The sensors used by Quadra-Trac II are tuned to detect and even predict slippage and immediately begin to counteract it to limit and even prevent a loss of traction. Since Quadra-Drive II also uses a two-speed transfer case, Rock mode is also added to the Selec-Terrain system.
