For the first time since 2012, Dodge has rejoined the compact utility vehicle segment. The muscle car brand'sĀ  CUV, the Hornet, offers the style and performance we've come to expect from Dodge, along with comfort and convenience features. At the top of the Dodge Hornet lineup is the R/T trim, offering exhilarating performance and optimal fuel efficiency with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Pairing Dodge's muscle car DNA with a PHEV powertrain brings the brand into the future. Please continue reading below to learn more about the hybrid power of the 2023 Dodge Hornet R/T!

What Powers the 2023 Dodge Hornet R/T?

The 2023 Dodge Hornet R/T tops the rest of the Hornet lineup in terms of both fuel efficiency and power. Underneath its hood, you'll find an all-aluminum turbocharged 1.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine. The turbocharged engine powers the front wheels of the Hornet R/T. Meanwhile, powering the rear wheels is a rear axle-mounted electric induction motor. Combined, the hybrid power provides 285-plus horsepower along with 383 lb-ft of torque for a top speed of 128 MPH. Thanks to the electric power, an impressive 184 lb-ft of torque is available instantaneously, providing an exciting 0-60 time. Additionally, with the turbocharged engine powering the front wheels and the electric motor powering the rear, the Hornet R/T offers standard all-wheel drive. The engine comes mated to a sturdy six-speed automatic transmission that can be controlled by the driver using steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

What Are the Dodge Hornet R/T's Driving Modes?

Of course, the Dodge Hornet R/T is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, often referred to as PHEV. And like any other PHEV, it uses gas and electric power with a battery pack that is recharged by an external source. Like most PHEVs, the Hornet R/T puts the driver in control of its usage with drive modes. The first is Hybrid, which is the vehicle's default setting. Hybrid mode prioritizes the electric power while coasting or decelerating and will only use the gas engine when additional power is requested. Meanwhile, the Electric mode disables the gas engine, running solely on all-electric power. The last mode is E-Save, which does the opposite. E-Save mode disables the electric motors to conserve battery power and runs solely on gas power. E-Save mode will automatically be activated when the battery is depleted. Drivers can choose between Passive and Active modes while in E-Save. Passive will simply maintain the battery's state of charge, while active recharges the battery using regenerative braking. This is the process of using the kinetic energy from the friction caused by braking, translating it into electrical energy, and sending it back to the battery pack.

Performance features of the 2023 Dodge Hornet R/T

While fuel efficiency is an important aspect of the Dodge Hornet R/T, performance is the name of Dodge's game. That's why engineers of the Hornet R/T gave it the PowerShot feature. PowerShot gives drivers a fifteen-second burst of an extra 25 horsepower and instant torque, which comes in handy while launching or merging on the highway. The PowerShot feature brings the Hornet R/T's 0-60 time down by a full second to 6.1 seconds! PowerShot is activated by pressing the gas pedal and pulling both paddle shifters at the same time. Once activated, a PowerShot light will illuminate on the dashboard for the duration of the power burst. The system will automatically check the battery's charge level and temperature before performing the PowerShot function.
