Here at Flagler Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we'd like to answer a few of these questions. Keep reading below to learn more!

What is a PHEV?

PHEV stands for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. The basic design of a PHEV powertrain is a traditional internal combustion engine, electric motors, and a rechargeable battery pack. PHEVs are designed to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency by cutting off fuel flow and powering down the gas engine, running on just electric power when decelerating, idling, or coasting. When the driver presses the gas pedal, the gas engine will seamlessly kick on to provide additional power. Jeep's specific PHEV powertrain, named 4xe, which is short for four-by-electric, uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine, an engine-mounted electric motor, a transmission-mounted electric motor, and a 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack. Drivers of a Jeep 4xe have the ability to control their vehicle's usage by choosing from Hybrid, Electric, and E-Save modes. Like most hybrid systems, the 4xe system uses regenerative braking. This is the process of converting the kinetic energy from the friction created by braking into electricity and then sending that energy back to the battery pack to increase or maintain its state of charge.

How Can I Charge My Jeep PHEV?

Jeep 4xe owners have two options for charging their vehicle. First is the Level I EV charger, which comes with the purchase of any Jeep 4xe model. This is a 120-volt charging cord that plugs into a home outlet. A 240-volt Level II EV charger is available for owners to buy. The Level II charger is actually a hardwired in-home charging station. It uses smart grid optimization to help lower your energy costs and is Energy Star certified. Jeep partnered with QMerit to give customers professional installation of their Level II charging kit and provide top-notch customer service. Additionally, the Level II EV charging station is weatherproof for indoor or outdoor use. It is also easy to use and, portable with a quick-release mount. Another impressive feature of the Level II charger is that they use WiFi, allowing you to control the charging settings on the QMerit mobile app and also monitor your vehicle's charging status.

How Long Does it Take to Charge a Jeep PHEV?

The standard 120-volt Level I EV charger gives 4xe owners full recharge from 0% to 100% in roughly 14 hours. However, this life can be very busy, which is why the Level II EV charger can fully charge the battery in as little as two hours. These times are approximate because of a few factors. These factors include the battery's current state of charge, condition, temperature, and the available current that the energy source is providing the charger.
