There are a lot of factors to consider when shopping for a premium large SUV. You want something sleek, stylish, and comfortable. You want a vehicle that delivers the ultimate in comfort and convenience, without compromising safety or capability. It's a tall order to fill, but of course, you deserve an SUV that checks all those boxes! Here at Flagler DCJR, we want to help you take the guesswork out of researching your new vehicle. To help narrow things down, we've selected two options to analyze side by side to see which one comes out on top. We'll be comparing the new 2022 Grand Wagoneer, the first-ever luxury SUV packed with elegant features and cutting-edge technology, against the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, which just underwent a total redesign to try to update it for the 2021 model year. Read on to discover which SUV is right for you!

2022 Grand Wagoneer Power & Handling

The 2022 Grand Wagoneer offers one robust powertrain option across all four of its trim levels. The Grand Wagoneer utilizes a 6.4-liter V8 engine paired to an 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, providing 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. 4-wheel drive is standard across the whole lineup and made even more powerful by the Quadra-Trac and Quadra-Drive 4X4 systems, as well as the Selec-Terrain Traction Management System. These allow the Grand Wagoneer to remain stable and composed on uneven surfaces, and conquer snow, mud, and rock with ease. When properly equipped with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package, the Grand Wagoneer boasts a best-in-class tow rating of up to 10,000 pounds. Driving the Grand Wagoneer is smooth and comfortable, with a hushed interior thanks to its acoustic glass.

2021 Cadillac Escalade Power & Handling

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade's standard engine is a 6.2-liter V8 paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, producing up to 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. There's also an available turbocharged 3-liter 6-cylinder diesel option which offers 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard for all five trim levels, though 4-wheel drive is available. In general, driving the Escalade is relatively smooth, though it lacks some of the Grand Wagoneer's athleticism around tight corners or when attempting to accelerate. Typically, a diesel engine indicates a boost in torque and towing capability, however the Escalade's diesel inline-6 performs about the same in these areas as its standard V8. In fact, even with the available Heavy-Duty Trailering Package, the Escalade's towing capacity maxes out at 8,200 lbs.

2022 Grand Wagoneer Features & Design

From all angles, the Grand Wagoneer is a truly stunning SUV with an aesthetic of classic Americana. Inside, the Grand Wagoneer seats up to 8 with standard Nappa leather interior on even the base-level trims. Upper levels enjoy premium quilted Palermo leather upholstery, as well as heated and ventilated seats with massage and memory settings. The Grand Wagoneer has up to 75 inches of total screen space available, between its central Uconnect 5 infotainment screen, and the available Front Passenger Interactive Display and Rear Seat Entertainment Displays. There's also an available industry-exclusive McIntosh audio setup that features 3D Surround System technology, fully immersing you in professional-grade sound quality from 23 speakers. There's also luxurious details like customizable ambient interior lighting, power-deploying side steps, a temperature-controlled cooler bin, and real open-pore Waxed Walnut wood trim along the dashboard.

2021 Cadillac Escalade Features & Design

Despite its total redesign for 2021, the Escalade's interior falls short of that of its competitors. The base-level trim is excluded from having real leather interior, and its advanced safety features aren't available across the board, either. The most prominent feature of the Escalade's interior is its massive 16.9-inch infotainment screen that takes up much of the dashboard. Toggling the physical controls may prove difficult at night, as they don't light up even when the headlights are turned on, requiring the driver to fumble a bit in the darkness. Like the Grand Wagoneer, the Escalade seats up to 8 passengers, yet despite its body design being longer than ever, only offers 25.5 cubic feet of rear cargo space compared to the Grand Wagoneer's 27.4 cubic feet. Additional features include semi-aniline leather interior (on upper trims), a 36-speaker AKG audio system, wireless charging, and massaging front seats.

Conclusion:

Though both of these premium SUVs are stunning to look at, we feel the Grand Wagoneer is the one that really delivers on luxury features and true capability. Between its gorgeous interior and its signature athleticism, the Grand Wagoneer offers the ultimate in style and performance.
